7 Things To Think About Before Launching A WordPress Blog

Launching A Wordpress Blog

If you are looking for a simple, quick and convenient way to start your website presence, begin with registering your domain and launching a WordPress blog may be the way to go.

WordPress is a free and open source blogging instrument and a content management system (CMS) based on PHP and MySQL database.
Its features include a plugin architecture and a template system.
This may seem complicated now, but it does not have to be.

WordPress is one of the many platforms to build your website with.
It’s a platform that has proven to work and is used by many people and just as many businesses launching a WordPress blog.
It is believed more than 60 million websites are running it thus making it the most popular system to build a blog on the Web.

I have been using WordPress for many of my sites for as long as I can remember.
I also tried others like Joomla and Drupal.
And even HTML editors like Dreamweaver, Sandvox, and Rapidweaver.
But for me, WordPress seems to fit perfectly.

I am not going to cover WordPress installation.
There are many video tutorials and written tutorials available to get you up and running.
If your hosting company does not have them, a quick search on Google will deliver ample results.

For many creating a blog may seem overwhelmingly complicated because there are so many options, possibilities, and choices to make.
The ideas for blogs are infinite.

There are many reasons for launching a wordpress blog:

  • to update your friends and family
  • to talk about your passion
  • to spread ideas
  • to become a better writer
  • to build a platform to get published as an author
  • to meet people
  • to market a product or service

What To Think About Before Launching Your WordPress Blog

There are several things you should give some thought before starting your WordPress journey.

1. Do you need a web presence, a place where people can find you online?
Maybe not.
What are the benefits of having a presence on the web?
What are the costs of building one regarding money, time and attention?
Are you able and willing to invest these in the forthcoming future?

Building and maintaining a blog can be a lot of work, and if you’re not up for it, don’t even bother.

2. If you need a presence on the web, do you need a unique domain and your own hosting.

There are several platforms (e.g., Blogger, Tumblr, wordpress.org) where you can blog without breaking the bank.
There is, however, a downside to this that I should mention.
The content you create can get lost without notice if this free solution goes broke, changes it terms of service or…

When you have decided that you want to host your domain on a WordPress platform, then there are several things you should think about before launching your site.

3. What will be the topic or topics you want to discuss.
Do you want a product related site, business related or site related to your life and interests?
What are you going to do online? Is there a general objective for you or your company.
If you’re a consultant, then you might consider selling your services if you’re an author your primary goal might be to sell your books.
Establish this from the beginning, so you can stay focused and do not lose sight of why you’re working on your blog.
If you have an interest in blogging, but you don’t particularly like writing, consider a blog about one of your other creative talents.
A photographer might blog to share her hobby with others.
Or you may write poetry or compose music that you could post samples of on your blog.
If people like what you have to offer, they will come back for more.

4. With that in mind do you have a title for your site.
And if so, do you want to buy a domain reflecting your title.

5. Have some content ready before launching your site.
Blogging usually involves writing (a lot).
If you don’t enjoy writing, you probably won’t enjoy blogging.
But if you’ve never tried to write before, you may discover a talent to enjoy.
So try writing a few blog posts as a practice.
Write about something that interests you!
And if you find out that you enjoy writing, then blogging may be for you!

6. Double check if you are able and willing to invest time, money and effort to build your site and keep it up to date.

7. Make a writing/posting schedule for your WordPress blog.
Keep it realistic.
Not being able to keep up with your schedule leads to frustration.
Being able to accomplish your plan gives you confidence and motivation to continue.
