Lyon is a city in eastern France, located at the place where the rivers Rhone and Saone meet.
The city’s slogan is: “Avant, avant Lion le melhor!” (Forward, forward, Lyon the best!)
The historic centre is on the list of World Heritage of UNESCO since 1998.
A lot of fellow Dutchmen pass Lyon when they take the Autoroute Du Soleil to reach the Mediterranean for their Summer Holidays.
We must have passed Lyon more than a dozen of times. Never considering a stop or stopover there.
In January 2017 we made an exception and put it on our list of cities to visit.
And this wasn’t a mistake.
Lyon has a lot to offer.
As mentioned before, Lyon is listed on the World Heritage List of UNESCO, and the cobblestone streets of this city have a history of 2000 years.
Vieux Lyon boasts one of the largest Renaissance neighbourhoods of Europe.
It is a student city with first-class shopping opportunities, antique markets, vibrant theatre and music festivals and several interesting museums.
One of the highlights for us was a visit to the Musee Des Beaux-Arts during a Henri Matisse exhibition “Le Laboratoire Interieur”
